The goal of Youthworks’ Street SAVVY Outreach project is to provide education, prevention and early intervention services to runaway, homeless and street youth in order to reduce the risk of sexual exploitation or abuse. The street workers will be engaging youth “on their own territory” in a low-key, non-threatening manner. The aim of these contacts is to demonstrate a sense of caring and concern and a willingness to help without judging. With homelessness more hidden in our area, the term “street youth” is seldom used. Many “street youth” have a “roof over their heads” but their living arrangements are not stable or safe. Street workers can be recognized by the bags or backpacks they carry with the Youthworks logo and Street SAVVY markings. These bags include such items as “snack packs,” meal vouchers, and survival packs, first aid supplies, laundry detergent, toiletries, transportation coupons or tokens, clothing, blankets, diapers, and school supplies. The bags also contain referral information and cards that can be given to those in need. Many of the supplies and services are provided by the collaborating partners.
Services available will include:
* survival aide
* individual assessment
* information & referral
* housing assistance
* snack packs & meal vouchers
* ride coupons & vouchers
* transitional living
* counseling
* crisis intervention
* follow-up
